Us: Chris, Ahmet, Steve, Keith, Daniel, James
Them: Prit, Stuart, Femi, Alan, Daniel, John (ours)

And that’s why John wins the “most likely to be late” award. A good ten minutes after the start, which was probably at about 10.45am, he decides to grace us with his presence. We donate him to Red as they’re a man and two goals down already. Initially he’s a liability and they go 4-1 down but by half time they’ve somehow evened things up, 5-5!

A closer affair in the send half, a goal each to make it all to play for. Chris was particularly ruthless for Red, adding four goals to their tally. However the surface does contribute significantly to the game due to the ball getting stuck in the mud. Dribbles come to an abrupt end as the ball gets left behind, imminent shots fail to materialise as the ball stops rolling, interceptions aplenty as passes fail to reach their target….amusement, annoyance, frustration, satisfaction, relief – all dependant on which team you’re on and where you are on the pitch….Daniel (theirs) and John were both thwarted in front of goal in the last five minutes because the ball got stuck at an inopportune moment. So they lost.

Final score: Us 7 – 6 Them

Them: Prit, Femi, Jack, Scott, Zavier, Daniel (theirs)

Very soggy and wet which meant, as it transpired, that you couldn’t tell if the ball was going to skim off the surface or get stuck dead in the slop. Chris fired a warning shot of intent with the first attack of the game and promptly made it 1-0 shortly afterwards. They weren’t causing too much trouble but Jack then let off a speculative shot which Daniel let squirm through him and in. They capitalised on the error and went 3-1 up by half time.

Paul restored hope by reducing the difference to one and then Colin crossed through a forest of defensive legs only for Daniel to fire at the keeper but watch gratefully as the saved ball fell kindly for him to side-foot in at the second attempt. And with five minutes to go, Yellow broke free with a counterattack and Ahmet unselfishly crossed for Paul to sweep in. And controversy right at the end with their Daniel dribbling into the area and shaping to shoot but going down under a challenge from Paul. Shouts for a penalty from a few of Red but most tellingly not from Daniel – Paul had got the ball. But like he said, you’ve seen them given.

Us 4 – 3 Them

Yellow: Gerald, John, Tufan, Keith, Ahmet, Daniel, Matt, Chris
Red: Phil, Rob, Tom, Prit, Larry, ?, ?, ?

So here we are again, another year. So to start it off with a bang we took on the Hairdressers for an 8-a-side. An even sided game though I think we edged it a bit. Their danger came from Rob getting in some tasty crosses from the right but the Yellow defence was resolute. Yellow got the more chances but couldn’t make them pay. 10 minutes to go, 0 – 0. Would this be the first ever goalless game? No. Yellow combined up well up front to fire in. Red scratched it off for offside. Shocking. There’d been no shouts for offside all game and suddenly a goal….cynical. So we’ll keep it. We’d been knocking on the door, hitting the post twice, firing wide several times and forcing a few saves. Phil, who’d been in goal all game tweaked his hamstring making a save so had to go off so the other chap who’d given up earlier came back on and John had to leave early so both teams finished a man down. They chanced an equaliser against the run of play and although we chalked it off for offside, we’ll keep it. With the clock ticking down, Gerald cut inside from the left and fired in a lovely shot. Victory was ours!

Final score: Yellow 2 – 1 Red

Yellow: Keith, Tufan, Ahmet, Gerald, Matt, Colin, Jack
Red: Paul, Chris, James, Richard, Kevin, Daniel, John

Great turnout for 7-a-side. Garnering support for the awards? We’re not that cynical. Tufan took advantage of some bobbles to help Yellow to romp away to a 3-0 lead. James swiped in a lovely volley in response and Chris fired in twice to even it up at 3-3 at the break.
Red took the lead in the second half followed by a prompt Yellow response and then Matt and Tufan increased the gap to 6-4. Daniel restored hope but Yellow finished the job. Rubbish report.

Final score: Yellow 7 – 5 Red

Yellow: Ahmet, Tufan, Gerald, Keith
Red: Daniel, James, Tufan

Woeful turnout. Can’t remember much – a week later I even had to ask who was on which team. Everyone has to get a touch before you can score, no scoring from your own half. Made all the more difficult by the sticky mud on the triangle.

Final score: Yellow 9-8 Red<

Red: Ahmet, Colin, Daniel, Chris
Yellow: Tufan, Oz, Jim, Matt

4-a-side to see out the year. Muddy slop. Both teams took led at least twice and both teams preferred to attack which meant that when they lost possession several attempts were made to launch a long shot over the keeper…Ahmet came close when his attempt skimmed the bar but Tufan eventually made it count when his long ball soared over the keeper and in. Everyone scored. Colin, Daniel and Tufan competed for muddiest person but the winner in the end was my washing machine which, as we based teams on the tops we were already wearing, only had to do 1 bib and the gloves – thank you for your consideration.

Final score: Yellow 19 – 19 Red

Yellow: Pete, Prit, Jack, Alan, Femi
Red: Colin, Chris, Daniel, Ola, Rafa

Shocking turnout for both teams, seven of theirs, three of ours. And just to make it worse someone had wandered off with the container keys so after ages looking for them we kicked off an hour late with jumpers for goalposts. It wasn’t a classic.

Final score: Red 8 – 6 Yellow

Them: Pete, Prit, Larry, Phil, Alan, Chris, Femi, Jack, Dan
Us: Chris, Kevin, Keith, Jim, Ahmet, Daniel, Matt, John, Ray?

The maybe showed up but two yesses didn’t so we mixed it up for a 9-a-side.

In no particular order….Alan stole in behind his marker but struck just wide; Prit put in a nice cross for their Dan who, with most of the goal gaping two yards away, aimed his shot back across the goal into Keith’s grateful hands. Our Daniel slid in with a great block to deny Alan. Defensive moment of the game? No – Matt surpassed it by getting nicking the ball off Prit just as his foot was about to strike the ball. Kevin got a clearance in the face from a fellow defender. Their Jack went off at half time injured and Phil pulled a hamstring so spent most the game in goal. After a great game of passing last week, it was back to it’s usual dodgyness. Our Daniel’s throw slipped out of hands and landed two metres in front of him – worst throw ever? Their Chris got frustrated. Their Dan bundled in a goal after a cross from Femi who may have been offside when receiving the pass. Was offside being given or not? The memo certainly didn’t reach everyone. There were several free kicks and Yellow had one after a handball just outside the area; Ahmet stepped up and fired his shot straight down the middle and in. Jim headed in from a cross. Impressive skill but sadly into his own goal. Our Daniel took possession of the loose ball from a corner, sprinted up the wing and a put in a tasty cross…handball? Who knows. It wasn’t given but he put in a second cross shortly after to our Chris at the back post. Pete got up to head in instead, wrong footing the keeper. Once again, impressive skill but also into his own net and depriving Chris of his first goal for PCFC. Romanian Ray (was that his name?) was quite good and twice looked to have put Yellow in front but the concept of studs had eluded him and glory did the same. Put all these moments in the right order and what do you get?

Final score: Us 2 – 2 Them

Red: Ahmet, Daniel, Kevin, Gerald, Tufan, Chris, Sundy
Yellow: Prit, Alan, Femi, Chris, Larry, Ola, ?

Pinch, punch, first day of the month, white rabbits. 7-a-side! The first head-to-head in a while and Chris took a bow for his debut – introduced by Matt who had the foresight to introduce a newbie while he became father for the first time; congratulations Matt, welcome Chris! We looked to be a man down but Sundy was late so joined us to make it even sides.

Kevin, Gerald, Ahmet made up a solid defensive wall, rotating according to who was in goal while Daniel had a great stint at right back, blocking several shots (a red bruise remains on his upper thigh at the time of writing is proof of his efforts) and he drove forward on the break once or twice, firing narrowly over the far corner when he should have crossed to the unmarked duo of Chris and Tufan who, with Sundy, made a formidable attacking threesome with Ahmet in support, who in turn, seemed to be in the right place to make an inordinate number of defensive interceptions. Our passing, for once, regularly met it’s intended target, satisfying triangles aplenty; Kevin and Gerald typified this by regularly passing calmly out of defence rather than the usual panicky hoof we resort to. Yellow just couldn’t gel and Red went into the break 4-0 up. Stand out moment – Chris almost sliding through the net at the back post in his attempt to get on the end of a cross that was unfortunately blocked before it even got to him.

The second half, Red’s enthusiasm got the better of them and the discipline went out of the window and consequently Yellow finally bundled one in, got another, added a third through an unavoidable ricochet own-goal by Daniel followed by a fourth but Reds attacking flair showed; Tufan was effective on his return after eight weeks out with few goals, Ahmet added a couple with his forays forward and Sundy also got on the score sheet. And Chris, yet to score on his debut went on a mazy run past static defenders and a statuesque keeper but could still only shoot wide – doubly bad as everyone had stopped because the clocked had already beeped. He’ll fit in well.

Final score: Red 8 – 4 Yellow
